Gemmiferous Girona
The town of Girona in Spain is just a 30 minute drive by hire car from the Costa Brava coast. With its own regional airport nearby, Girona's many monuments and historic buildings attract their fair share of tourist attention. Just one and a half hours drive away lie the Pyrenees and Barcelona is within easy reach with just a 20 minute journey.
The historic quarter of Girona can best be viewed from across the River Onyar which traverses the town.
Sant Pere's Church, the beautiful cathedral with its stunning bell tower and widest nave in Europe and Passeig archeologic set of gardens is a must-see on your list. The La Fontana d'Or Museum, the Arabian Baths and the sandy beaches and secluded coves along the Costa Brava coast lure many visitors to Girona and the surrounding area every year.
Inland, the province is verdant and fertile, with agriculture being the main source of income apart from tourism. Ideal for camping, cycling, hiking and rural tourism with accommodation in fincas being readily available, Girona province is more about life style choices than mere sight seeing or beach holiday.
In winter skiing and snowboarding in the Pyrenees attracts a very different sort of visitor to the area and in Girona itself the summer crowd, who sat in cafes around Plaça de la Independencia and Plaça del Vi and Plaça de la Catedral and watched the fashionable world go by, is then replaced by a more sedate Spanish set of visitors, who value the area for its outstanding natural beauty, rustic charm and fine food. When the weather is less warm there are art museums, a museum on moving pictures and an archaeological museum showcasing finds from the province to while away the time before dinner in one of the many tapas bars.
